From the book:

Introduction

It was my mother, Claire McCann, who taught me about compassion, the value of a hard day’s work, and the importance of laughter. The lady loved to laugh. Indeed, Mom’s sense of humor was so contagious that while our friends hurried outside after dinner to play, my four siblings and I would linger at the table just to hear her tell another funny story.

But of all the lessons Mom taught us, I believe the most important was her tremendous sense of family. My mother, who was raised by a single mother without aunts, uncles, or cousins living nearby, said her greatest accomplishment was her family. Money may have been tight, but she and Dad made sure that there was plenty of love to go around.
