Rabbi Renee is a very lovely woman, but she is rather distracted and was very unfocused during our ceremony. She was very responsive to email and met with us a number of times, and she is a warm, nice person who made us comfortable. She also met with my husband's parents, to allay some of their concerns about the ceremony. She is super flexible about Judaism and was willing to accept a number of our adjustments to the ceremony, such as not referring to God. However, she asked us to email her the story of how we met, and during the ceremony, she completely botched the story and ended up saying I met my husband because I was dating our close mutual friend. In the moment, it turned out fine, because it was hilarious, and we actually got lots of compliments on our "stand up comic" Rabbi. However, I had asked her to keep her remarks brief, and to not make the ceremony funny, as it was such a significant moment for us. Her remarks were long and rambling, and while the hilarity actually worked, I could not recommend her because she made the whole thing a joke. She also read from her script in such a way as to make it sound completely insincere ("Where was I? Oh, page 2...we are so happy to be here today..."). We wrote our own vows, and that made the end of the ceremony heartfelt, which was all I could have wanted, but otherwise I would have been quite upset with her performance. In addition, she was over 30 minutes late and arrived after most of the guests.
